Year 2 - Construction and Evaluation

Our Schools' Project was designed to include all students, all sciences and to emphasize the importance of environmental awareness in a fun and memorable way.

After researching and designing, students were ready to build the Greenhouse, its Solar Panels and its overall connections and proceed to the evaluation of their construction.

Year 2: Our Program

Before constructing the Greenhouse, students decided to construct the Solar Panels. They had two project ideas regarding the Solar Panels. The first group's target was the construction of a Solar Panel that heats up the water in the panel's pipes. The second group wanted to investigate the possibility of heating up air and then directing the hot air in the Greenhouse in order to increase its temperature faster. The second group constructed the panel but they concluded that the increase in the Greenhouses temperature with the assistance of their construction was not significant. Therefore the altered their construction by heating up a classroom using solar energy. Their idea was awarded the National Prize of Innovative School Projects.

Other Relevant Constructions

Greenhouse Effect

Students wondered why the Greenhouse Effect is named after a Greenhouse. Different theories were set and they had to investigate them through the construction of a model and understand how this affects the Global temperature.

Evaluate the Greenhouse's Effieciency

One kilowatt meter and a simple electrical air heater were enough for the students to measure the efficiency of their construction. They measured the electrical consumption of the heater with the Central Heating System they constructed on and off comparing nights with identical weather conditions.
