Year 3 - Implementation in the teaching process

Our Schools' Project was designed to include all students, all sciences and to emphasize the importance of environmental awareness in a fun and memorable way.

On the third year our project focused on the implementation of the Greenhouse and the Sun in general, into the teaching process. Students were taught several subject areas of their Science syllabus, through constructions.

Greenhouse Plants Distillation

Students were to be taught about the distillation procedure in Chemistry. Therefore they planted and took care of their own aromatic plants and when the time was right, they cut the leaves and they learned how the distillation takes place, by distilling their own plants.

Measuring Earths Circumference

How big is our Earth? Can we measure it using the Sun?
Students constructed a valid experiment that counts the Earths Circumference using the Sun and a Ruler. This experiment was conducted hundreds of years ago by Eratosthenes, measuring the Earths Circumference, proving that the ancient Greeks knew that the Earth is spherical.

Strawberries and Statisctics

Students Syllabus in Mathematics was about Statistical analysis of data. Students decided to investigate whether or not the Strawberries that grow in the Greenhouse are bigger than the ones that grow out of the Greenhouse. In order to do so they planted strawberries in and out of the Greenhouse. They measured the volume of each strawberry by submersing each strawberry in the water and using Archimedes' principle. The data taken were used to calculate mean value and dispersion. Strawberries grown in the Greenhouse were bigger, nut the ones out of the Greenhouse were sweeter...

Planting Potatoes

Potatoes usually take a lot of space in the fields. Students addressed this problem and they searched for the optimum solution. They decided to use old car tires to plant the potatoes inside, saving space and water.

Comparing Plant Growth

Is the Greenhouse really so effective? Students compared the growth of strawberry plants grown in and out of the Greenhouse. All necessary precautions for a valid experiment were taken. The plants where watered and fertilized identically and the exposure to sun light was the same. In all cases, the plants inside the Greenhouse were bigger, but they didn't taste as well as the ones grown out of the Greenhouse.

Solar Car

In Technology class, students needed to study how Solar Panels work, how they are used and ways to make them more efficient. This lesson was adopted by our program. Students decided to built a Solar Car and have a speed contest afterwards. They designed and constructed their cars working in groups.
